Names and Titles of Christ

An A–Z Scripture Guide to the Names and Titles That Reveal His Identity, Character, Authority, and Work

The names and titles of Jesus are not ornamental details scattered throughout Scripture. Together they reveal who He is.

He is the promised Seed in Genesis, the Passover Lamb in Exodus, the Prophet anticipated by Moses, the Son promised through David, the Branch foretold by the prophets, the suffering Servant of Isaiah, the Son of Man seen by Daniel, the Word made flesh in John, the Great High Priest of Hebrews, and the Lamb upon the throne in Revelation.

Some of the entries below are personal names. Others are divine or messianic titles. Still others are offices, metaphors, prophetic descriptions, or declarations concerning His person and work.

They should not all be treated as formal names in precisely the same sense.

Yet together they answer the greatest question ever asked concerning Jesus:

“Who do you say that I am?”
Matthew 16:15

Part Two

The Name of the LORD

Before examining the familiar “Jehovah names,” it is important to understand the name from which they come.

YHWH — יהוה

Often represented in English as Yahweh, Jehovah, or, in the KJV, most commonly LORD in capital letters.

Primary Scripture

Exodus 3:14–15; Exodus 6:2–3

When Moses asked what he should say when Israel asked the name of the God who sent him, God answered:

“I AM THAT I AM.”
Exodus 3:14

God then revealed the covenant name represented by the four Hebrew consonants:

YHWH — יהוה

This name is commonly called the Tetragrammaton, meaning “four letters.”

The KJV ordinarily renders YHWH as LORD.

“Jehovah” developed as a traditional English form of the divine name and appears explicitly in several KJV passages, including Exodus 6:3, Psalm 83:18, Isaiah 12:2, and Isaiah 26:4.”

The name reveals the God who simply is—the eternal, self-existent, covenant-keeping LORD.

Part Three

The Jehovah Names

These names and descriptions reveal different aspects of the LORD's character, provision, presence, power, holiness, and covenant faithfulness.

Jehovah-Jireh

יהוה יִרְאֶה — YHWH Yireh

Meaning: The LORD Will Provide / The LORD Will See

Scripture: Genesis 22:14

“And Abraham called the name of that place Jehovahjireh: as it is said to this day, In the mount of the LORD it shall be seen.”

The Revelation

Abraham gives this name to the place where God provides the ram in place of Isaac.

The Hebrew idea of “seeing” carries the sense that the LORD sees the need and provides accordingly.

Christological Fulfillment

Genesis 22 becomes especially powerful when read within the larger biblical story.

Isaac asks:

“Behold the fire and the wood: but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?”

Abraham answers:

“My son, God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering.”

Centuries later John the Baptist sees Jesus and cries:

“Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.”
John 1:29

On Mount Moriah, God provided a substitute.

At Calvary, God provided the Lamb.

The LORD provides.

Jehovah-Rapha

יהוה רֹפְאֶךָ — YHWH Ropheka

Meaning: The LORD That Healeth Thee

Scripture: Exodus 15:26

“For I am the LORD that healeth thee.”

The Revelation

Immediately after Israel's deliverance from Egypt, God reveals Himself as the One who heals.

The Hebrew root rapha carries the idea of healing, restoring, curing, or making whole.

Christological Fulfillment

Jesus' ministry repeatedly reveals God's compassion toward the sick and broken.

Matthew connects His healing ministry with Isaiah:

“Himself took our infirmities, and bare our sicknesses.”
Matthew 8:17

Jesus heals the blind, the lame, the diseased, the oppressed, and the broken.

The healing ministry of Christ provides a visible revelation of the compassion and restorative power of God.

Jehovah-Nissi

יהוה נִסִּי — YHWH Nissi

Meaning: The LORD Is My Banner

Scripture: Exodus 17:15

“And Moses built an altar, and called the name of it Jehovahnissi.”

The Revelation

After Israel's victory over Amalek, Moses builds an altar.

A banner was a rallying point—something raised above an army identifying the people under whom they fought.

Israel's victory ultimately belonged to the LORD.

Christological Connection

Christ is the One around whom God's redeemed people gather and through whom victory is obtained.

Isaiah speaks of the Root of Jesse standing as an ensign for the people:

“Isaiah 11:10”

The New Testament applies this passage to Christ in Romans 15:12.

He is the One to whom the nations gather.

Jehovah-Shalom

יהוה שָׁלוֹם — YHWH Shalom

Meaning: The LORD Is Peace

Scripture: Judges 6:24

“Then Gideon built an altar there unto the LORD, and called it Jehovahshalom.”

The Revelation

Gideon feared that encountering the angel of the LORD meant death.

Instead, he heard:

“Peace be unto thee; fear not: thou shalt not die.”

His response was to build an altar called Jehovah-shalom.

Christological Fulfillment

Isaiah foretells the coming Son as:

“The Prince of Peace.”
Isaiah 9:6

Paul then makes an extraordinary declaration concerning Christ:

“For he is our peace.”
Ephesians 2:14

Peace is ultimately found not merely in changed circumstances, but in a Person.

Jehovah-Tsidkenu

יהוה צִדְקֵנוּ — YHWH Tsidqenu

Meaning: THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS

Scripture: Jeremiah 23:5–6

This is among the most explicitly messianic of the Jehovah titles.

Jeremiah prophesies:

“Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will raise unto David a righteous Branch…”

He continues:

“And this is his name whereby he shall be called, THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS.”

The Revelation

The coming Davidic King bears the extraordinary designation:

YHWH Tsidqenu.

Christological Fulfillment

Paul writes:

“But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness…”
1 Corinthians 1:30

Our righteousness is not ultimately found in our ability to establish ourselves before God.

It is found in Christ.

Jehovah-Shammah

יהוה שָׁמָּה — YHWH Shammah

Meaning: The LORD Is There

Scripture: Ezekiel 48:35

The final words of Ezekiel declare:

“And the name of the city from that day shall be, The LORD is there.”

The Revelation

The great hope is not merely a restored city.

It is restored presence.

God is there.

Christological Fulfillment

Matthew begins the story of Jesus with:

“Emmanuel… God with us.”
Matthew 1:23

John declares:

“And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us.”
John 1:14

And Revelation ends with God's dwelling among His people:

“Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men…”
Revelation 21:3

From Genesis to Revelation, the story moves toward restored presence.

The LORD is there.

Jehovah-Mekoddishkem

יהוה מְקַדִּשְׁכֶם — YHWH Mekaddishkem

Meaning: The LORD Which Sanctifies You

Scripture: Exodus 31:13; Leviticus 20:8

“I am the LORD that doth sanctify you.”

The Revelation

God does not merely command holiness.

He is the One who sets His people apart.

Christological Fulfillment

Hebrews connects sanctification directly to Jesus:

“Wherefore Jesus also, that he might sanctify the people with his own blood, suffered without the gate.”
Hebrews 13:12

Christ does not simply call His people to holiness.

Through His sacrifice, He sanctifies them.

Jehovah-Raah / Jehovah-Rohi

יהוה רֹעִי — YHWH Ro‘i

Meaning: The LORD Is My Shepherd

Scripture: Psalm 23:1

“The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.”

Technically, Psalm 23 does not construct this expression as an altar-name in precisely the same manner as Jehovah-Jireh or Jehovah-Nissi. Nevertheless, YHWH Ro‘i accurately represents the Hebrew statement “YHWH is my shepherd.”

Christological Fulfillment

Jesus declares:

“I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep.”
John 10:11

Peter calls Him:

“the Shepherd and Bishop of your souls.”
1 Peter 2:25

Hebrews calls Him:

“that great shepherd of the sheep.”
Hebrews 13:20

Peter later calls Him:

“the chief Shepherd.”
1 Peter 5:4

Psalm 23's Shepherd becomes one of the great images Jesus uses to reveal Himself.

Jehovah-Sabaoth

יהוה צְבָאוֹת — YHWH Tseva’ot

Meaning: The LORD of Hosts

Scripture: 1 Samuel 1:3; Isaiah 6:3 and throughout the Old Testament

“Hosts” can refer to armies or heavenly multitudes.”

The title presents the LORD as sovereign commander over the armies of heaven and all creation.

Isaiah hears the seraphim cry:

“Holy, holy, holy, is the LORD of hosts: the whole earth is full of his glory.”
Isaiah 6:3

Christological Connection

John later comments on Isaiah's vision in the context of unbelief toward Jesus and writes:

“These things said Esaias, when he saw his glory, and spake of him.”
John 12:41

This creates one of the New Testament's most profound connections between Isaiah's vision of divine glory and Christ.

Jehovah-Elyon

Meaning: The LORD Most High

Scripture: Psalm 7:17; Psalm 47:2

“I will praise the LORD according to his righteousness: and will sing praise to the name of the LORD most high.”
“Elyon” means Most High.”

This emphasizes God's absolute supremacy above every power and authority.

Christological Connection

Jesus is announced as:

“the Son of the Highest”
Luke 1:32

And the New Testament presents Him exalted:

“Far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion…”
Ephesians 1:21

Part Four

Other Great Hebrew Names and Titles of God

Not every important divine name begins with “Jehovah.” Scripture contains several other foundational names and titles that deepen our understanding of God and illuminate the identity and work of Christ.

Elohim

אֱלֹהִים

Meaning: God; the mighty Creator.

Primary Scripture: Genesis 1:1

“In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.”

The Bible's opening verse introduces Elohim as Creator.

Christological Connection

John reveals:

“All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.”
John 1:3

Colossians declares concerning Christ:

“For by him were all things created…”
Colossians 1:16

El Elyon

אֵל עֶלְיוֹן

Meaning: God Most High

Scripture: Genesis 14:18–22

Melchizedek is:

“the priest of the most high God.”

God is supreme over every throne, spiritual power, ruler, and kingdom.

El Shaddai

אֵל שַׁדַּי

Meaning: God Almighty

Scripture: Genesis 17:1

“I am the Almighty God; walk before me, and be thou perfect.”

God reveals Himself to Abraham as the Almighty—the God fully sufficient to accomplish what He promises.

Christological Connection

Revelation presents Christ within the revelation of God's absolute sovereignty, culminating in His universal reign.

El Olam

אֵל עוֹלָם

Meaning: The Everlasting God

Scripture: Genesis 21:33

“And called there on the name of the LORD, the everlasting God.”

God does not begin.

He does not age.

He does not diminish.

He is everlasting.

Christological Connection

Micah's prophecy of Bethlehem says the ruler's:

“goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting.”
Micah 5:2

John begins even farther back:

“In the beginning was the Word.”
John 1:1

El Roi

אֵל רֳאִי

Meaning: The God Who Sees Me

Scripture: Genesis 16:13

Hagar declares:

“Thou God seest me.”

One of Scripture's earliest personal revelations of God's character occurs in the wilderness to a suffering woman who believes herself abandoned.

God sees.

Christological Connection

Again and again in the Gospels, Jesus sees those whom others overlook—the sick, the outcast, the grieving, the poor, the sinner, the desperate, and the forgotten.

Adonai

אֲדֹנָי

Meaning: Lord, Master, Sovereign

Used throughout the Old Testament as a title emphasizing God's lordship and authority.

Christological Connection

The earliest Christian confession centers upon the lordship of Jesus:

“Jesus Christ is Lord.”
Philippians 2:11

Ancient of Days

Scripture: Daniel 7:9–14

Daniel sees the Ancient of Days enthroned in eternal majesty and the Son of Man approaching Him to receive universal and everlasting dominion.

The passage is especially important because Jesus repeatedly identifies Himself as the Son of Man and draws upon Daniel 7 when describing His future appearing.

Part Five

Melchizedek — The King-Priest Who Points to Christ

High Priest After the Order of Melchizedek

Meaning: The eternal King-Priest whose priesthood does not pass away.

Old Testament Foundation: Genesis 14:18–20; Psalm 110:1–4

New Testament Fulfillment: Hebrews 4:14; 5:5–10; 6:19–20; 7:1–28

Primary Scripture: Hebrews 7:17

“For he testifieth, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.”
Hebrews 7:17

Long before the priesthood of Aaron was established, Scripture introduces a mysterious figure named Melchizedek.

Abraham had just returned from battle when Melchizedek appeared:

“And Melchizedek king of Salem brought forth bread and wine: and he was the priest of the most high God.”
Genesis 14:18

Melchizedek was both a king and a priest.

Hebrews draws our attention to the significance contained within his name and title:

“First being by interpretation King of righteousness, and after that also King of Salem, which is, King of peace.”
Hebrews 7:2

King of Righteousness.

King of Peace.

Priest of the Most High God.

Then Melchizedek disappears from the Genesis narrative almost as suddenly as he appeared.

But his significance within Scripture was not finished.

Centuries later, David recorded a remarkable prophetic declaration:

“The LORD hath sworn, and will not repent, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek.”
Psalm 110:4

The coming Messiah would not merely be a King.

He would also be a Priest.

And His priesthood would be forever.

The book of Hebrews reveals the fulfillment of this prophecy in Jesus Christ:

“Called of God an high priest after the order of Melchisedec.”
Hebrews 5:10

Jesus did not become a priest through descent from Aaron or membership in the tribe of Levi. According to the flesh, He came from the tribe of Judah and the royal line of David.

His priesthood belongs to another order.

The order of Melchizedek.

Hebrews describes Melchizedek with extraordinary language:

“Without father, without mother, without descent, having neither beginning of days, nor end of life; but made like unto the Son of God; abideth a priest continually.”
Hebrews 7:3

The wording deserves careful attention.

Scripture does not explicitly say that Melchizedek was Jesus. Rather, Hebrews says that he was “made like unto the Son of God.”

Christians have historically understood the identity of Melchizedek in different ways. Some understand him as a historical king-priest whose presentation in Genesis was divinely designed to foreshadow Christ. Others have proposed that Melchizedek was a pre-incarnate appearance of Christ.

Hebrews does not explicitly settle that question by identifying Melchizedek as Jesus.

What Hebrews makes unmistakably clear is what his priesthood was pointing toward.

Jesus Christ is the greater and eternal King-Priest.

King of Righteousness

The name Melchizedek is interpreted in Hebrews as “King of righteousness.”

Jesus Christ is called:

“Jesus Christ the righteous.”
1 John 2:1

And Paul declares that Christ:

“of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption.”
1 Corinthians 1:30

The righteousness pictured in Melchizedek finds its greater revelation in Christ.

King of Peace

Melchizedek was also King of Salem, which Hebrews interprets as:

“King of peace.”

Centuries later Isaiah would prophesy of the coming Son:

“And his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.”
Isaiah 9:6

And Paul makes the remarkable declaration concerning Jesus:

“For he is our peace.”
Ephesians 2:14

The King of righteousness is also the King of peace.

Righteousness and peace meet perfectly in Christ.

Priest of the Most High God

Genesis identifies Melchizedek as:

“the priest of the most high God.”
Genesis 14:18

Jesus is revealed as something greater:

“a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God.”
Hebrews 4:14

Melchizedek ministered as priest of El Elyon — God Most High.

Jesus is the Son of the Highest and our eternal Great High Priest in the very presence of God.

The King Who Is Also Priest

This is one of the most fascinating features of Melchizedek.

He is simultaneously king and priest.

Under the later covenant with Israel, these offices were ordinarily distinct. Kings came through the royal line of David and the tribe of Judah, while the Levitical priesthood came through Aaron.

Yet Melchizedek appears before that system as both.

King.

Priest.

Psalm 110 then brings those two realities together in the Messiah.

The same Psalm begins:

“The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou at my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool.”
Psalm 110:1

And only three verses later:

“Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek.”
Psalm 110:4

The One seated in royal authority at God's right hand is also the everlasting Priest.

In Jesus Christ, kingship and priesthood meet perfectly.

He is the Son of David, yet He is also the Great High Priest.

He reigns, yet He intercedes.

He rules, yet He represents His people before God.

He is the King who became the sacrifice and the Priest who offered Himself.

A Priest Forever

Earthly priests eventually died.

Their ministry ended, and another priest took their place.

But not Jesus.

Hebrews declares:

“But this man, because he continueth ever, hath an unchangeable priesthood.”
Hebrews 7:24

His priesthood cannot be interrupted by death because He conquered death.

He died.

He rose.

He lives forever.

And therefore His priesthood continues forever.

“Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them.”
Hebrews 7:25

This is the wonder of Christ's priesthood.

He does not merely once intercede.

He ever lives to make intercession.

A Better Priesthood and a Better Covenant

The order of Melchizedek also reveals the superiority of Christ's priesthood.

Jesus is called:

The Great High Priest — Hebrews 4:14

High Priest after the order of Melchizedek — Hebrews 5:10

A Priest forever — Hebrews 7:17

Surety of a better testament — Hebrews 7:22

Mediator of the new covenant — Hebrews 12:24

These titles belong together.

The eternal Priest establishes the better covenant.

The One who offered the sacrifice became the Mediator.

And unlike the priests who continually offered sacrifices, Jesus offered Himself.

“But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God.”
Hebrews 10:12

The Priest sat down.

The sacrifice was sufficient.

The Shadow and the Substance

Melchizedek appears briefly in Genesis.

David remembers him prophetically in the Psalms.

Then Hebrews returns to that mysterious encounter and reveals why it mattered.

Genesis gives us the mysterious king-priest.

Psalm 110 gives us the prophetic promise.

Hebrews reveals the fulfillment in Christ.

Melchizedek is the King of righteousness.

Jesus Christ is the Righteous One.

Melchizedek is the King of peace.

Jesus Christ is the Prince of Peace and our Peace.

Melchizedek is the priest of the Most High God.

Jesus Christ is the Great High Priest who has passed into the heavens.

Melchizedek appears as king and priest.

Jesus Christ reigns eternally as King and Priest.

Melchizedek's appearance becomes a pattern.

Christ is the greater reality toward which that pattern points.

And the mystery introduced in Genesis ultimately directs our attention once again toward Jesus:

Our Great High Priest forever after the order of Melchizedek.

Part Seven

From the Names of the LORD to the Revelation of Christ

This is where the names become more than a word study.

The Old Testament progressively reveals the character of the LORD.

He is Jehovah-Jireh, the LORD who provides.

And in the fullness of time:

“God will provide himself a lamb.”
Genesis 22:8

John looks upon Jesus and declares:

“Behold the Lamb of God.”
John 1:29

He is Jehovah-Rapha, the LORD who heals.

Jesus walks through villages healing the sick, restoring the broken, opening blind eyes, cleansing lepers, and raising the dead.

He is Jehovah-Shalom, the LORD our peace.

Isaiah foretells a Son called:

“The Prince of Peace.”

Paul declares concerning Jesus:

“He is our peace.”

He is Jehovah-Rohi, the LORD our Shepherd.

Jesus says:

“I am the good shepherd.”

He is Jehovah-Tsidkenu, THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS.

Paul declares:

“Christ Jesus… is made unto us… righteousness.”

He is Jehovah-Shammah, THE LORD IS THERE.

Matthew announces:

“Emmanuel… God with us.”

John beholds the mystery:

“The Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us.”

And Revelation carries the story to its glorious conclusion:

“Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them.”

The names revealed across the centuries were never meaningless theological vocabulary.

They revealed the character of the God who was making Himself known.

And then the Word became flesh.

The Shepherd walked among His sheep.

The Healer touched the unclean.

The Provider became the Lamb.

The Righteous One bore the sins of the unrighteous.

The Prince of Peace made peace through the blood of His cross.

The Creator entered His creation.

The King became a servant.

The Lord of glory washed feet.

The Resurrection entered a grave.

The Life tasted death.

The Lamb was slain.

And the Lion prevailed.

The Scriptures invite us to follow every name, every promise, every title, every shadow, every prophecy, and every revelation until they lead our eyes again toward the One at the center of it all:

Jesus Christ.

“For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.”
Colossians 2:9

The names give us language.

The Scriptures give us revelation.

But the destination is not merely a greater vocabulary about God.

It is fascination with Him.
